What is Sports Therapy?
Positive Touch therapy is run by Hayley Bennett BSc who graduated the University of Chichester in Sports Therapy. A Graduate level Sports therapist will have the highest training level possible for Sports massage and has a further understanding of the body and injury associated with the body. As well as being able to plan and administer home exercise programmes/ rehabilitation exercises to recover from injury and assess any postural or technique faults that can be improved to help patients achieve their goals as quickly as possible.
Sports Therapy focuses on the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation back to functional, occupational and/or sports specific fitness, whatever your age or sporting ability.
It is based on the principles of sport and exercise sciences, including physiological and pathological processes, focusing on musculoskeletal and soft tissue rehabilitation. There are many similarities to physiotherapy and shared training however a physiotherapist's training will include wider healthcare aspects whereas a sports therapist will tend to focus exclusively in the sports and exercise field.
A Sports Therapist has the knowledge, skills and ability to:
To provide a professional body for Sports Therapists that will monitor and give advice on all matters pertaining to Sports Therapy.
To accredit nationally recognised educational qualifications, as a prerequisite for membership.
To provide comprehensive medical malpractice and public liability insurance, for Members.
To provide a platform for Members to further their knowledge, careers and academic or therapeutic ambitions.
To lobby legislative and educational organisations to ensure that the protection of both the public and Members is addressed by national registration and regulation.
To advise regulatory, political, legal, judicial and sporting bodies and organisations on all matters pertaining to Sports Therapy and Sports Therapists.
Sports therapy is an unregulated profession meaning the 'Sports Therapist' title is not protected and thus it is worth looking for a therapist that is a member of an association such as the Society of Sports Therapists (SST).
The Society of Sports Therapists was established in 1990 to address the growing demands from sport and leisure on everyone involved in the management and care of injured participants. The Society’s Founder Members sought to create a membership organisation that would standardise and monitor the provision and availability of support services. Equally with the rise in the number of incidents requiring immediate "lifesaving" first aid techniques, the Society also aimed to ensure that adequate, effective and appropriate training courses were provided and monitored.
