It can be hard to motivate yourself to complete your rehabilitation exercises, you are not alone! We understand life can be hectic, so we have put together some tips to help you stay on top of them - as our patients who progress the fastest are the ones who have committed to their programmes with regularity.
We may only see you for a small amount of time during treatment sessions, this may be 1x a week, fortnight or monthly. The time you spend outside of the clinic is also very important.
Find a goal that means something to you that keeps you motivated during your journey, this may be that you want to get back to your chosen activity (running, football, walking etc) or even just running around with your kids/grandkids at the park! Keeping that end goal in mind and focusing on the bigger picture will be one of the best motivators to do your exercises that can help to achieve it. Make some smaller goals as well - as your therapists we will help you discover what these are. By achieving these week to week, you will get a boost and will keep you motivated as well.
Managing expectations of injuries as well as understanding what is happening to your body is vital in terms of recovery. Why would you bother doing exercises if you are not sure why you need to do them! It is also important to start regaining an element of control over your body - especially if pain has taken control. We want you to ask us as many questions as possible!
If you are struggling to fit your new routine in, tell us! We can help identify barriers and try to suggest new ways to help you move forward on your journey.
Setting reminders on your phone is a great way to set aside that time! At Positive Touch Therapy we use a programme called My Physio Rehab, this allows us to send you your tailored programme which has pictures and videos of the exercises - how many repetitions and sets you should be doing and how often. You are able to leave your therapist feedback which we can review during your follow up appointments.
We have patients practising their balance whilst brushing their teeth, heel raises waiting for a cup or tea, lunging to the lounge and even rehabilitation exercises on their morning and evening commutes! Try to complete your programme throughout the day by finding time incorporating the exercises into your daily routine!
If you’re injured, looking for help on how to improve your performance, or would like help on how to stay committed to your rehab plan then please do get in touch or book in for an assessment to give yourself the best chance of getting the most out of your physiotherapy treatment.
